Applying for jobs can feel like a full-time role itself. Whether you are actively searching or keeping an eye out for the right opportunity, how you present yourself on paper matters. Employers make decisions quickly and often within seconds of reviewing a CV or cover letter, so ensuring your application is clear, relevant and tailored is the key to standing out.

Here are some practical ways to make your applications work harder for you:

Tailor your CV to each role

A generic CV rarely gets attention. Highlight the skills and experience which are most relevant to the role you are applying for, ensuring your profile feels aligned with the job.

Showcase transferable skills

If you are changing industries or roles focus on transferable skills, such as leadership, communication, problem-solving and adaptability. Employers want to see how your experience applies in different contexts.

Cover letters: use them wisely

If requested, a strong cover letter can make all the difference. Keep it short, specific and engaging - explain why you are a great fit while adding personality beyond your CV.

Optimise for ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems)

Many companies now use ATS software to screen CVs before a recruiter even sees them so use keywords from the job description, avoid images or complex formatting and ensure your file type is compatible (.PDF or .DOCX).

Highlight achievements over responsibilities

Long CVs don’t get read; instead of listing duties, focus on key achievements and outcomes, providing quantifiable results.  How did your work impact the business? Use figures where possible: “Increased sales by 20%” is stronger than “Responsible for sales”.

Keep your online presence sharp

Many hiring managers check LinkedIn before reaching out. Make sure your profile reflects your experience, skills and career aspirations. If you are job searching, engage with relevant industry content as this helps position you in the right spaces.

At ProMatch, we work with businesses to ensure recruitment is fair, strategic and effective but job seekers also play a crucial role in positioning themselves strongly for opportunities.

If you are job searching, focus on clarity, relevance and impact.  Small changes to how you present yourself can make a big difference in landing the right role.
